Psalms 119:105-128

Text:

"105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. 106 I have sworn an oath and confirmed it, to keep your righteous rules. 107 I am severely afflicted; give me life, O Lord, according to your word! 108 Accept my freewill offerings of praise, O Lord, and teach me your rules. 109 I hold my life in my hand continually, but I do not forget your law. 110 The wicked have laid a snare for me, but I do not stray from your precepts. 111 Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart. 112 I incline my heart to perform your statutes forever, to the end. 113 I hate the double-minded, but I love your law. 114 You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in your word. 115 Depart from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commandments of my God. 116 Uphold me according to your promise, that I may live, and let me not be put to shame in my hope!
117 Hold me up, that I may be safe and have regard for your statutes continually! 118 You spurn all who go astray from your statutes, for their cunning is in vain. 119 All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross,    therefore I love your testimonies. 120 My flesh trembles for fear of you, and I am afraid of your judgments.121 I have done what is just and right; do not leave me to my oppressors. 122 Give your servant a pledge of good;
let not the insolent oppress me. 123 My eyes long for your salvation and for the fulfillment of your righteous promise. 124 Deal with your servant according to your steadfast love and teach me your statutes. 125 I am your servant; give me understanding, that I may know your testimonies! 126 It is time for the Lord to act, for our law has been broken. 127 Therefore I love your commandments above gold, above fine gold. 128 Therefore I consider all your precepts to be right; I hate every false way."

What does this reveal about God's character?

God is the director of our steps. He is a God of sequence and order, and wants us to rely on Him fully to reveal each step one by one.  God is our peace.  He enables us to be filled with unsurpassed serenity as we journey on the path He has prepared for each of us.  God is our covering and protection.  He will guard us as He guides us. God is our support.  He comforts, sustains and refreshes us with His presence.  God is a God of action.  He spoke and it came to be (creator).  He calls and equips us to fulfill His will (makes us ready). His word will not return void (completes His will).

Questions:

1) Am I allowing the Lord to guide me, step-by-step?

2) In what ways do I rely on the Lord?  In what ways do I lean on myself or others instead of God?

3) Do I experience peace in the midst of turmoil?  If not, am I dwelling in God's presence?  Or do I look to things other than God to bring me peace and security?

4) How am I resting in God and in His presence?

5) What areas of my life do I need God to act?

Prayer:

Father God, thank you for not leaving me on this journey alone, but for showing me each step of the way. Please forgive my arrogance for taking leaps without you, instead of trusting in you to guide my every step. Please give me the patience to follow your ways, even when it seems to be going much slower than I would like.  Please give me the wisdom and faith to trust in you, even when I can't see how the next step will bring me closer to the destiny to which you have called me.  Lord, thank you that you will never leave me or forsake me, that your presence goes before and with me (Deuteronomy 31:8).  I choose to rest in your presence.  I ask you to fill me with your peace that surpasses all understanding, as I seek you (Philippians 4:7).  I choose to lean on you for support and refreshment.  Refresh my soul, Lord!  It feels weighty at times with so much sadness and suffering in the world.  But, I know that you are a God of action, and I know that you will right every wrong (Isaiah 61) and that you will accomplish what you have set out to do (Isaiah 46:10). Thank you for your faithfulness, which endures to all generations (Psalms 119:90).  In Jesus' name I pray, Amen!
