Psalms 16

Text:

Psalms 16 (NAS)

"(1) Preserve me, O God, for I take refuge in Thee. (2) I said to the Lord, 'Thou are my Lord; I have no good besides Thee.' (3) As for the saints who are in the earth, they are the majestic ones in whom is all my delight. (4) The sorrows of those who have bartered for another god will be multiplied; I shall not pour our their libations of blood, nor shall I take their names upon my lips. (5) The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and my cup.  Thou dost support my lot. (6) The lines have fallen to me in the pleasant places.  Indeed my heritage is beautiful to me. (7) I will bless the Lord who has counseled me; Indeed, my mind instructs me in the night.  (8) I have set the Lord continually before me; because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. (9) Therefore, my heart is glad and my glory rejoices; my flesh will also dwell securely. (10) For thou wilt not abandon my soul to Sheol; neither wilt thou allow Thy Holy One to undergo decay. (11) Thou wilt make known to me the path of life; in Thy presence is fullness of joy; in Thy right hand there are pleasures forever."

What does this reveal about God's character?

God wants good things for us.  He is our portion and inheritance.  He has a plan for each of us that He will make known to us.  He is joy incarnate.  He longs to bless us with "sweet things" as we take refuge in Him.

Questions:

(1) Is Jesus my focus?

(2) Am I fully resting and abiding in Him?

(3) Can I say that there is no good in me besides Him? Or do I struggle with pride and self-righteousness?

Prayer:

Father, please rescue me from myself, from my pride and my self-righteousness.  Remind me that I am but dust and that I desperately need a Savior.  Help me to compare myself to Your Holiness and not to those around me.  Teach me to fully abide in and rest in You. Bring me to the place where I can say that there is no good in me except You.  Help me to value You and Your Sacrifice more than myself, my dreams, my ambitions, my family or my time.  I give myself fully unto You and allow You to do a cleansing work in me. Thank you, Lord, for your goodness and your faithfulness.  In Jesus's name, Amen!
